Situation

Heavy load of organic sludge in a lagoon that contained organic sludge accumulated during 40 years of dairy product manufacture

Challenges

Difficult access and high odour if disturbed[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”3/4″][vc_column_text]

Background

75% of the lagoon area was required to expand the site. This necessitated draining the lagoon and removal of the high level of sludge before filling with concrete to provide a base for civil construction.
Dredging was considered but the odour nuisance, environmental disturbance and cost made this option untenable.

Solution

Having been successful on a bioremediation project at another Arla site, Eco-WMT was approached for a proposal to dose eco-tabs. This option avoided any increase in odour, did not create any environmental disturbance and was approximately 10% of the cost of dredging.

The contract was awarded to Eco-WMT and the dosing was undertaken over a 16 week period from April to August 2018

Dosing was made from the banks of the lagoon and from a boat to reach the most distant points. The objective was to digest 870m3 of dry organic sludge.

Why are Eco Tabs better than my current products?

There are no current products the same as Eco-tabs. Physical removal of the sludge and specialist removal by tanker was the only alternative.

Eco Tabs are unique and 100% environmentally friendly and 100% safe for all human, animal, avian, aquatic and wildlife. Eco Tabs are a blend of specific non-pathogenic bacteria chosen to do a certain job, i.e. digest (eat) organic sludge. Once the bacteria have digested all the organic sludge, they die off (3-4 months) and are digested by the new bacteria. The byproducts of non-pathogenic bacteria are 95% water and 5% carbon dioxide.

Do Eco Tabs work out better value than my current products?

Compared to manual cleaning/removal and disposal customers can expect to significantly reduce their costs dependent on flows, arriving effluent etc.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

Are there other benefits of using Eco Tabs?

Each Eco Tab contains billions of dehydrated bacteria CFU. Every microbiologist will confirm that bacterial digestion is optimised in an aerated environment. Therefore, every Eco Tab contains sodium bicarbonate to deliver an oxygenated environment within the water column without the need for pumps, power etc.
