Hydrocarbon contamination in the environment is a very serious problem, whether it comes from petroleum, pesticides or other toxic organic matter. Environmental pollution caused by petroleum is of great concern because petroleum hydrocarbons are toxic to all forms of life.
Companies who deal will spillages of diesel, degreasers and other vehicle fluids have to be collected in oil/water interceptors (OWIs) as it is illegal to discharge hydrocarbons into the waste water network. However, as OWIs fill up and the toxicity increases, companies spend increasing amounts on vacuum tankers, treatment and disposal costs. If not kept under control, companies face huge fines from water authorities for contamination.
Why treat the problem when you can eliminate it?
Traditionally, companies dealing with spillages of diesel, degreaser and other vehicle fluids have to be collected in oil and water interceptors (OWIs) as it is illegal to discharge hydrocarbons in the waste water network. Added to this, vacuum tankers and disposal costs makes it expensive. Not only is the practice damaging to the environment, it does not deal with the problem at source.
